CARE - Community Assistance Revitalization and  Education Program

Community Assistance Revitalization and  Education (CARE) Program

CARE is a SAYNO- developed model at-risk community assistance program, started in 1993 to counter drugs, violence, illiteracy, and other social ills in at-risk neighborhoods.

CARE Program Philosophy:
  • Problems such as drugs, teen pregnancy, violence, gangs, and school drop-outs, don't exist separately in a vacuum, but are interrelated. They reinforce each other and can foil separate efforts to counter them, so these problems must be addressed in relationship to each other.
  • Problems are not simply black and white, or the responsibility of just the police, schools, courts, and churches, but of the entire community, and require community-wide involvement.
  • Problems can be addressed most effectively by focusing on the individual family and the immediate neighborhood, with intent to restore a sense of family cohesion, neighborhood identity, association, and residential "grass roots" involvement. ("It takes a whole village to raise a child.")
  • Resources, while limited, exist within Montgomery to address many problems, but it requires a specific effort to secure funding and initiate programs to bring resources together to work in concert for maximum, cost-efficient effect.

CARE Program Focus:
